Duplicate File Finder

The Duplicate File Finder locates repeated files on your Mac, groups the copies together, and lets you choose which one to keep.

Short answer

The Duplicate File Finder finds files that exist in more than one place on your Mac and groups the copies together, so you can keep one and remove the rest.

The Duplicate File Finder is a feature of Neatwise: Mac Cleaner, a macOS utility distributed through the Mac App Store.

The Duplicate File Finder groups identical files together rather than matching on filename alone.

What the Duplicate File Finder does

A duplicate is a file that exists more than once with identical contents. The Duplicate File Finder locates those sets, groups the members together, and presents each group so you can choose which copy to keep.

The important detail is that it matches on content, not on name. Filename matching produces both false positives (two different files that happen to share a name, such as Invoice.pdf from two suppliers) and false negatives (the same photo saved as IMG_4821.jpg and holiday-2019.jpg).

How it works

  1. It scans the locations you have granted access to.
  2. It groups files whose contents are identical.
  3. It shows each group with the location and size of every copy.
  4. You choose the copy to keep; the rest are removed on confirmation.

When to use it

Run it when the storage report shows a large amount of space in folders where you expect repetition — photo libraries, Downloads, Documents, and any folder that has been through a restore from backup. Restoring a backup into a folder that already contained those files is one of the most reliable ways to end up with every file present twice.

Deciding which copy to keep

Within a group, the copies are identical, so the decision is about location rather than content. Keep the copy that sits where you will look for it, and remove the ones in staging areas such as Downloads or a desktop dump folder.

Two cautions:

  • Application data. Files inside an application’s support folders may be referenced by that application by path. Removing a copy that an app expects to find will break the app even though an identical copy exists elsewhere.
  • Links and aliases. A duplicate that something else points at is not spare. If a shortcut, an alias, a script or another document refers to a path, removing that path breaks the reference.

When in doubt, keep both copies. The space is recoverable later; a broken reference is harder to notice and harder to fix.

What the Duplicate File Finder does not do

  • It does not treat similar images as duplicates. Identical contents only — for near-identical pictures, that is Similar Photos.
  • It does not delete anything without confirmation.
  • It does not merge folders or resolve naming conflicts — that is the File Mover.

Where it fits

The finder is the third step in How to Find Duplicate Files on Mac, and it appears in the wider How to Free Up Storage on Mac sequence.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find duplicate files on my Mac?
Compare file contents rather than filenames. Two files with different names can be identical, and two files with the same name are often different. The Duplicate File Finder groups files by content so the groups it shows are genuine duplicates.
Why does my Mac have so many duplicate files?
Common causes are importing the same photos more than once, downloading a file again instead of finding the first copy, duplicating a document to edit it and then keeping both, and restoring from a backup into a folder that already had the same files.
Is it safe to delete duplicates?
It is safe to remove a copy when at least one identical copy remains and nothing references the copy you are removing. Review each group and keep the copy in the location you actually use.
Can it find duplicate photos?
The finder groups files whose contents match. For photos that are the same image at different resolutions or in different formats, the file contents differ, so they are not reported as duplicates.
