File Mover
The File Mover scans the folders that fill up, then moves the files you pick to a destination you choose — an external drive, or simply somewhere with room.
Short answer
The File Mover scans the folders that accumulate large files, groups what it finds by source, and moves the files you select to a destination folder you choose.
The File Mover is a feature of Neatwise: Mac Cleaner, a macOS utility distributed through the Mac App Store.
The File Mover moves files between locations; it does not delete them.
What the File Mover does
Some folders fill up no matter how often you clear them: Downloads, Desktop, Documents, and the file-transfer folders that desktop chat clients create. The files in them are usually not junk — they are things you still want, sitting on the disk that happens to be full.
The File Mover is for that situation. It scans those folders for files above a size threshold, groups what it finds by where the file came from, and moves the ones you select to a destination you choose.
How it works
- It scans Downloads, Desktop, Documents and the chat-app transfer folders for files above the size threshold.
- It groups the results by source, so you can see which folder is responsible for the space.
- You select the files to move — individually, by group, or with the smart selection.
- You choose the destination folder.
- It moves the selected files there, reporting anything it could not move and why.
The distinction that actually matters
Moving a file only frees space when the destination is on a different volume. An external drive, a network share, a second internal disk — anything other than the volume the file already sits on.
Moving a file from ~/Downloads to ~/Documents frees nothing. The file never
left the disk. If your goal is space, the destination has to be somewhere else,
and the most common answer is an external drive.
Why move instead of delete
Deleting is the right answer for files you do not want. It is the wrong answer for the video you finished editing, the installer you may need again next month, or the photo library you are archiving rather than discarding.
Moving keeps the file. It just stops it from occupying the disk you are trying to keep free. The Large File Finder tells you what is big; the File Mover is what you do about the parts of it you want to keep.
Name collisions
If a file with the same name already exists at the destination, the incoming file is written under a timestamped name instead. The move never silently replaces something you already had.
What the File Mover does not do
- It does not delete files. Deletion belongs to the cleaner and the finders.
- It does not decide what you should keep — it moves exactly what you selected.
- It does not sync. A move is a one-time operation, not a mirror; changing the source later does not update the destination.
Where it fits
The File Mover appears in How to Find Old Files on Mac and in the wider How to Clean Up a Mac routine, where it is the step that handles the files you are not ready to delete.
Frequently asked questions
- Does moving a file to an external drive free up space on my Mac?
- Yes — moving a file to a different volume removes it from the original volume, so the internal disk gains the space back. Moving a file between two folders on the same disk frees nothing at all, because the file never leaves the disk. This is the single most important distinction when you are trying to make room.
- How is this different from deleting?
- Deleting is for files you no longer want. Moving is for files you still want but do not need on the startup disk — a video project you are done editing, an installer you might need again, a photo library you archive. The File Mover never deletes anything.
- What happens if a file with the same name already exists at the destination?
- The move would otherwise fail or overwrite. The File Mover keeps both by writing the incoming file under a timestamped name, so nothing at the destination is replaced.
- Can I move files back?
- Yes. A move is an ordinary filesystem operation, so Finder can move the file back to wherever you want it. The File Mover is a convenience, not a proprietary library that locks files away.
